Papers and correspondence of activist and news reporter Jackie Forster (née Jacqueline Moir Mackenzie; 6 November 1926 – 10 October 1998). Including autograph, typescript, printed and photocopied material.
The archive contains papers relating the Forster’s literary and acting career, including draft, proof and printed materials of her works; personal and business correspondence, acting career related materials, such as scripts and notes, drafts of speeches and debates, annotated drafts, press cutting of Forsters articles and of issues related to the gay and lesbian community in the media and a range of personal papers detailing Forsters activist work on various projects throughout her life. The archive also contains personal correspondence and materials relating to Forster’s family members, photographs of Forster throughout her life and a collection of books signed and dedicated to her.

Series contains newspaper clippings written about and by Jackie Forster, regarding her work in gay and lesbian activism and appearances at events and functions. From 1955 where she was an actress and known as Jacquline Mackenzie, to 1965 where she’s described as a “‘retread spinster’ (ie. divorced)” to her later years where she was well known as a gay rights activist. Includes media companies such as Gay News, LIP magazine, DIVA Magazine, Observer, The Times, The Pink Paper, High Life, The Independent, Daily Express, Daily Mirror, Capitol Gay.

Series contains 4 Lesbian Avengers Tshirt, 3 white and 1 black (black from later era). 1 file containing various activism materials related to the Pink Project (1997), invitations to ‘Outspoken’, a booklet for the the 1980 Women’s Agenda, articles and media relating to gay and lesbians in the news and the theatre. Also includes files with correspondence, audio visual, media, mission statements and general activist information; Radclyffe Hall Restoration (1994), Daytime Dykes (1997), BBC Radio 1 Lesbian and Gay Pride (1998), Kenric (1998). Series also contains, ‘Shades of August’ (1990) - a study on the problems faced by older lesbian and gay men and 4 files containing research, articles, newspaper cuttings and material relating to gay and lesbian news and activism, feminist liberation, feminist revolution within the mainstream and gay and lesbian media. Including cuttings from The Guardian, Pink paper, Women’s Liberation, Frontlines, London Women in the 80’s, The Lawyer, Paddington Mercury, Feminist Review, Gay Times, The Second Half, Diva and more.

Series contains photographs of Jackie Forster, her friends, colleagues and others throughout her career. Includes professional acting headshots from the BBC, an envelope titled ‘Daytime Dykes 1996, photographs from a 1987 ALGWE Women’s Society meeting, a series of shots from Forster’s visit to Glasgow Women’s Library and photographs from Sappho and other events.

This includes material related to her work in the theatre including The Royal Theatrical Fund Annual Report and The Shakespeare Globe Trust, invitations, correspondence between Forster and Dawn Airey re. a proposal about a lesbian and gay series ‘Outhouse’ on Channel 5 (1996), Sappho related material, material related the Gay Rights Act in 1995 and Stonewall organisation, reunion dinners, letters from publishers, a photocopied letter from the Prime Minister (1989), letter Forster sent to the Times re. The Times representation of Emperor Hirohito’s funeral, family letters, correspondence from a student union, the BBC and Channel 4, National Council for Civil Liberties and other activist networks and organisations. Also contains letters regarding the death and obituary of Sandy Horn. Series also contains personal correspondence such as birthday cards and postcards.
