Clare Henry was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire in 1947. She worked as an art critic for The herald for 20 years, moved to New York in 2000 and started writing for The Financial Times. Henry was a founding member of Glasgow Print Studio and editor-at-large of State of Art Magazine. She has curated a number of exhibitions and was the commissioner for Scotland at the Venice Biennale in 1990.

Founded in 1976, Scottish Campaign to Resist the Atomic Menace (SCRAM) aimed to oppose the construction of the Torness nuclear power station in Scotland, as well as nuclear power in general. They organised some of the largest anti-nuclear demonstrations in the UK in the 1970s and 80s. Their action was unable to prevent the building of the Torness power plant, however they were involved in other successful anti-nuclear activity, including the Mullwharcher Campaign.

The Equal Opportunities Commission was constituted under Part VI of the Sex Discrimination Act 1975. It was set up as an independent statutory body with the following powers:

to work towards the elimination of discrimination on the grounds of sex or marriage;
to promote equality of opportunity for women and men;
to keep under review the Sex Discrimination Act and the Equal Pay Act;
and to provide legal advice and assistance to individuals who have been discriminated against.

On 1 October 2007 the three equality commissions (the Commission for Racial Equality, the Disability Rights Commission, and the Equal Opportunities Commission) merged into the new Equality and Human Rights Commission.

The Women's Voluntary Services, known since 2013 as the Royal Voluntary Service, was founded in 1938 as an organisation to recruit women into the Air Raid Precautions services to help in the event of war. Today it acts as a voluntary organisation, giving practical help particularly to older people in need throughout Britain. The service has been an independent registered charity since 1992.
